Ok....I'm taking a different approach with this film review. After watching so many films about cannibalism, I want to know exactly what makes a person a cannibal and, why. Why does a person choose this?
Now, as I've said before; I hate cannibalistic movies. I know there is some truth in pretty much any film out there, but something about cannibalism makes my blood run cold. I mean...knowing that somewhere...out there in this mad world, there is a psycho that would chop me up and shushkabob me. It's in humane. More in humane than just raping me, killing me, and tossing my body in the lake.
I've always said my number one fear is to become a victim of human trafficking. Now, I think my number one fear would be to become some lunatic's meal. Go buy a steak asshole, and let my body rot in peace.
A Bit of Knowledge
So, where was I? Oh yeah...the search. So, I did a search on cannibalism, and came across a site on How Cannibalism Works, and article by Josh Clark. He talks about cannibalism lightly here, and in a sense I can understand, but I still say it's weird.
First, we are introduced to Armin Meiwes. This guy found his victims on online personal sites with advertisements. His catch line was "Well-built men, 18-30, who would like to be eaten by me." Well, needless to say, one guy was stupid enough to respond. 43-year-old Bernd-Jurgen Brandes. This first description I cannibalism is called Panthrological Anthropophagy.
Next, they talk about Survival Cannibalism. Here, they talk about 16 survivors of the Andean plane crash and how they resorted to cannibalism to stay alive. Clark describes this as the most disturbing cannibalism. He talks about the Donner Party, a group of Westward expansionists set out to California, and 89 of them took a shortcut through the Sierra Nevada mountains. They faced starvation, ran out of other food resources, and turned to cannibalism.
Now, we come to Endocannibalism. Clark talks about the Yanomamo tribes of Brazil and Venezuela. They practice Endocannibalism by mixing ashes of dead relatives in a plantain soup and eating it. This is the opposite of Survival Cannibalism. It often contains a ritual or socially sanctioned method.
Next is Exocannobalism. Clark talks about the corpse of Claude Neal who was tortured, forced to commit autocannibalism, and killed by white Southerners in Florida. Exocannibism is based on to terrify, to steal someone's life, or to eat.
I also came across Rolo Tamasi's article on the top 10 cases of human cannibalism, where we are introduced to 10 top cannibals. Among them:
*Alferd Packer
*Albert Fish
*Revolutionary United Front
*Issei Sagawa
*Andrei Chikatilo
*Mauerova Family
*Armin Meiwes
*Jeffrey Dahmer
*Carib West Indian Tribes
*Stella Maris College Rugby Team Uruguay
Back to the movie
Now that we got the basis of cannibalism out of the way, we can get back to the film. "Hansel & Gretel" is about brother and sister, Hansel and Gretel Grimm, who, after hearing about their father's engagement to his girlfriend, Gretel gets mad and runs away. Hansel follows him, and they stumble upon a house deep in the woods.
After being hurt, Hansel helps Gretel to the house, where they seek help from Lillith. Well, Hansel knows Lillith...but what she doesn't know, she will soon find out.
At one point, this movie had me cringing. I really get uneasy with cannibalistic movies. However, this movie isn't too unsettling. There are worst cannibalistic movies out there.
Check it out on Netflix.
