Blood Creek (2009)

"Blood Creek"
Release Date: October 9, 2009
Rated R.
Horror, Thriller
Director: Joel Schumacher

Rating: One Thumb Up

This film was slow at first, but once the action picks up it's well worth the wait.

Victor escapes imprisonment with a family hiding an occult-obsessed man bent on completing his blood ritual. He returns with his brother bent on revenge.

This movie is a different kind of movie. Not your average cannibal-zombie movie, that's for sure. It has a twist in it that I didn't see coming.

This is definitely a good watch. Check it out on Netflix.

Peace.

The Purge

The Purge
Release Date: June 7, 2013
Horror, Sci-Fi, Thriller
Rated R
Director: James Damonaco

Rating: One Thumb Up

So....let me get this straight. For one day of the year. For 12 hours. All crime is legal. That pretty much sums up this movie here. That is one F'd up concept. I don't know what to say about this movie.

Well.....I guess I can start with what it's about. During lockdown, just minutes before the purging hour, Charlie (sweet Charlie) sympathetically let's a stranger inside the house. He felt bad for him and wanted to help; how could he have known he would bring baggage with him.

A little tip about baggage; it's a motherfucker. Pardon my French. But I hate baggage because baggage doesn't know when to leave. It lingers in your presence to make your existence miserable. It's like poison, waiting to dissolve you slowly. Gotta love baggage.

Now, let's talk about Charlie, shall we??? Charlie (sweet Charlie). Do us a favor, sweetheart. Next time mommy and daddy tells you to stay put, you stay put. No one told you to let a stranger into the house during purging hour.

As for you, Adelaide (nice name), stop thinking you're grown and listen to mommy and daddy. It saves you a headache in the end.

Mr. and Mrs. Sandin....what were you thinking??? I mean...it's like you were thinking for a minute....then you lost your train of thought. Usually when that happens you get back on track. Only....you never got back on track. You chose an entirely different track. On the plus side, you put up a pretty good fight.

This film was a good watch. It could have been better, but a good film overall. Check it out.

Peace.

Movies Coming Out in 2014

Time to take another break from the monsters and ghosts for a moment and talk about other horrors. 2014 has some interesting, but sad movies coming out.

"Son of God" 2014
Starring Diogo Morgado as "Jesus", this intense film takes you on the journey of Jesus and unconditional love as he is put to the ultimate test. Although the story of Jesus should be a happy one, it will always be a sad story in my eyes. A horror story, for the horrors he went through to prove his love and endurance.

"Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom" 2014
Idris Alba stars as "Neslon Mandela". We are taken on a journey through his life starting from his childhood. He is arrested and endures long days in prison. That itself is horror to me. The things that go on in prison (so I've seen in movies and read in books) are scary.

"Heaven is for Real" 2014
Connor Corum stars Colton, a young boy who possesses a special gift to see the deceased, and see what heaven is like. I call this story the fear of the unknown. Phenomenon films like this (I.e. "The Sixth Sense", "Hide And Seek", "Insidious") make me wonder if my young daughter is going to inhabit any "special" abilities.

"Maleficent" 2014
Disney's "dark side". Angelina Jolie stars "Maleficent", the villain from "Sleeping Beauty". We've heard Sleeping Beauty's story...now it's Maleficent's time to shine as she tells her story.

There you have it. Four awesome movies coming out next year! I don't know about you, but I am excited and cannot wait.

Peace.

Sint (Saint) (2010)

Sint (Saint)
Release Date: November 10, 2010
Horror
Rated: R
Director: Dick Maas

Rating: One Thumb Down

"The 5th of December will never be the same." ("Sint").

This was number 11 on my "13 Horrors of Christmas" List, where I recommend 13 horror movies to watch through the month of December. I am watching this movie early while it's available on Netflix.

It always starts with an urban legend. Classic. "Every 23 years, on a full moon, on the 5th of December...yada yada yada."

Well...every 23 years....on a full moon...on the 5th of December...Saint Nick visits the town. But this isn't jolly St. Nick. This Saint Nick is a Bishop. A Bishop who was murdered years ago, and whose spirit comes back to seek revenge and avenge his death.

That's all you need to know. Check it out on Netflix.

Peace.

Rubber

Rubber
Release Date: November 10, 2010
Horror, Comedy
Rated R
Director: Quentin Depieux

Rating: One Thumb Up

"No fucking reason." ("Rubber").

I have very few words for this movie. I mean....it's a tire for crying out loud. And they gave it a name! Robert. "Robert" the killer tire.

Killer tire, people. That's all you need to know. A random tire that rolls along a town, alone and abandoned. Without a care in the world. He seems innocent, right? Guess again. Don't get on Robert's bad side or you will become toast. Or...something like that.

All I could do while watching this movie was shake my head and laugh. But it's so interesting because it accomplishes what it sets out to do in the first place.

I say it's well worth the watch. Check it out on Netflix.

Peace.

Martyrs (2008)

Martyrs
Release Date: September 3, 2008
Horror
Rated: R
Director: Pascal Laugier

Rating: Two Thumbs Up

Martyr: "A person who voluntarily suffers death as the penalty of witnessing to and refusing to renounce a religion." (The Free Marriam-Webster Dictionary).

The test of endurance. This is a test for both the victim in the film and the audience (us). How much can you take before it becomes enough?

When Lucie seeks revenge on those who kidnapped her and tortured her as a child, her and her friend Anna are put into a nightmare.

Now Anna's faith is put to the test. How long can she last before it becomes too much?

Now, the test comes to the audience. How much of Anna's suffering can you endure before you say "enough is enough"? This film is especially offensive and degrading to us women as we witness young Anna being put through torture beyond her imagination.

This film takes us on a journey into Martyrdom. This is indeed a real practice that's being conducted in Christianity, Islam, and Palestine. The Practice Martyrdom suggests that it's dwelling with one's relationship with a certain religion.

This is a truly deep and disturbing film, almost traumatizing, and I recommend all to see at least once.

Peace.

Funny Games (1997)

Funny Games
Release Date: March 11, 1998
Crime, Drama, Thriller
Rated: NR
Director: Michael Haneke

Rating: One Thumb Up

Okay...this film had me....and then it lost me. Part of the reason is that the whole film is in German language, so, me being fluent English, I had to concentrate on the subtitles to understand what was being said. When you have to concentrate on subtitles, it takes away from the focus of film. Next to that, what was going on and the reason were blinding me.

The whole time I'm watching it I'm staring  at the screen dumbfoubdedly trying to figure out what the heck was going on. I knew what was going on, but the film managed to lose me before it even got started. And all throughout the film, it kept losing me.

A family (mother, husband and son), Anna, Georg and Gerog Jr., are vacationing in a cabin. One knock on the door by two strange young men, Peter and Paul....looking for "eggs" by the way...and their vacation turns into a nightmare as the young men subject them to torture by making them play sadistic games with one another.

This film will creep you out psychologically. It makes you think about the cruel intentions of some people and what they would do to innocent people at the expense of their own satisfaction.

Maybe back in it's time this film was considered disturbing. For being a 90's film, it definitely shows some age to it. When you take this film and compare it to the films of today, "Funny Games" is a bit looney. The bad guys on here are quite the amateurs in the game of trespass, hostage, and torture. The victims, the family, are not so bright even from the beginning. This film goes downhill before the action even begins.

The idea and plot of this film is great. The execution is not so great. In any case, it's worth the watch. Check it out on Netflix.

Peace.

Men Behind the Sun

Man Behind the Sun
Release Date: March 1989
Rated: NR
Horror, Drama, History, War
Director: Tun Fei Mou

Ok.....I think I need therapy after watching this film. This film is hard to sit through. If you thought "Salo, or the 120 Days of Sodom", "Cannibal Holocaust", "A Serbian Film", "Human Centipede", and "Martyrs" was disturbing, "Men Behind the Sun" will truly fuck with your mind. Pardon my French. I don't know how I survive through some of these films. My mind must be that much demented. {Runs to the phone to dial therapist}.

Let's take a journey into history so we can get the basis of this film, shall we? Unit 731 was also called the Asian Auschwitz. It was a top secret biological and secret chemical weapons facility. The Japanese took the Chinese, Korean, South East Asians, Pacific Islanders, and Allied POWs as prisoners and subjected them to lethal human experimentation. This unit is "thought to have been responsible for the deaths of up to 200,000 civilians and military personnel". (Environmental Graffiti).

"Men Behind the Sun" takes us on an inside look of the horrors that went on in Unit 731. The prisoners of the Japanese endured horrors you never thought possible. This film takes torture to a level that becomes very uncomfortable and unsettling. The hardest fact to cope with - even harder than the terrors that go on - is that this film is based on true events and is what went on in Unit 731.

Human torture at it's finest. You see sights inside such movies of this caliber. "The Human Centipede", where we're witnessing Dr. Heiter's inhumane experiment. "A Serbian Film", where we are taken into the world of snuff porn. "Salo, or the 120 Days of Sodom", where we witness the cruelty of young innocent teenagers by unforgiving Fascists. "Martrys", where we see the unsympathetic brutality of an innocent young  woman. "Cannibal Holocaust", where we are taken into the Amazon and witness unspeakable events.

None of these films align with the horrors you will witness in "Men Behind the Sun. Even the controversial "Salo, or the 120 Days of Sodom" is taken from number 1 on my "Most Disturbing Films" list and moved down the list to make room for this film.

Despite it's trembling terrors, "Men Behind the Sun" is a must-watch for all mature audience. At least once. As depraving as it is, it is also a journey through time, and a history lesson for those that don't know the history of Unit 731 and the Japanese during World War II.

Check it out when you can.
Peace.

The Rules of the Game

Ok guys....I am dedicating this post to all of the horror movie victims. I get s tired of the cliches in horror movies that I just want to rip my hair out. Not saying that this will change the way of horror films today, but I certainly hope directors get a clue.

ONE. You know that "weird noise" that you heard coming from the backyard? Yeah....do me a favor: LEAVE IT WHERE IT'S AT! It's 1:00 in the morning. Most people are asleep. Who has time to worry about a noise coming from outside? Even more; who is going outside to check on that noise? Let me guess. You? Ha! Knock yourself out.
One film that comes to mind is The Strangers. Just a bit different scenario. A couple notices three masked strangers standing outside their house. I would have left them right there and called 9-1-1. I guess they didn't know that number existed.

TWO. When a killer tells you he's "inside the house", DO NOT lock yourself IN THE HOUSE! He's telling you where he is. That means you need to do the opposite, and get the heck out of the house.
I think we all know what this is a prime example of. "Scary Movie". I know this is supposed to be a spoof and a comedy....but, for crying out loud. Even the killer in this movie is retarded! This is a no-brainer.

THREE. When being chased by a killer, always stay out in the open. You can never run out of places too run. You see that abandoned warehouse building at the end of the road? Don't run inside, hoping to find a place to hide. The killer will find you and he will kill you. And you will be doomed because you have run out of options.
"Friday the 13th" movies are a great example of this. The victims always want to run inside somewhere and hide instead of staying out in the open. The outdoors is your safe haven in this case.

FOUR. ALWAYS STAY TOGETHER. No matter what, never seperate from the group. That's what the killer wants you to do. That way, its easier to kill you one-by-one.
The "Scream" movies remind me of this. You start off as a group, next thing you know, you're alone. Meanwhile. Ghostface is picking you guys off one-by-one. You should have stayed together.

FIVE. There is strength in numbers. The more of you there are, the better are your chances of survival. You each need to stick together and hit the killer with everything you've got.
In "Butcher Boys", the four friends split up when being chased. Why split up??? Each of you could have taken them on. Each one gets one.

SIX. FIGHT BACK! You know that saying; "You never know how strong you are until being strong is the only choice you have"? Well...you need to take that seriously,, sweetheart. If you're going too go down, go down with a fight.
"The Descent". Six women go inside of a strange cave and end up fighting for their lives. At least, they fight anyway.

SEVEN. Get this in your head and let it sink in. NO ONE IS YOUR FRIEND, AND EVERYONE IS THE SUSPECT. Once you let that tip sink in, you will be better off and yur decision-making strategies will line up. The guy who was your boyfriend early on??? Yeah...consider him your ex-boyfriend now because he may just be the one trying to kill you.
"The Hazing" is a perfect example here. The spirit of a professor is able to transfer to different bodies. You never know who the killer is at any given time.

EIGHT. This is a very important rule. This rule may just save your life. RUN, BITCH!! RUNNNNNNN!!!! When you are being chased by a lunatic, use your legs and run! Run like...well, like you're trying t save your life. Even when you get tired and can't run anymore...still run. The minute you slow down, that gives the killer an advantage. That makes him closer to his target. That's the last thing you want.

There you have it. 8 rules to the game. See you in the next movie!

Peace.

Face Off

Evil Dead (1981)

Evil Dead (2013)

So, I'm gonna start a new trend here. I call it Face Off. It's where I take two different versions of a film and review and compare them.

"Evil Dead", one of my favorite films. Of course I'm more of an originals girl, but I have to give both films credit here.

1981
2013
A group of friends go camping in the woods. They explore the cabin and they come across a collection of strange things, including a book called "Book of the Dead". Now....I don't know about you....but when I see a book like this, I would stay away from it. Especially when it warns me NOT TO READ FROM IT in the first place.

I'm very superstitious about this stuff. You see it too many times in movies. You go reading a random chant, and you've awakened the dead. Way to go! Now we get to dance with the dead. How fun! Just for future reference; the next time I want to live "Thriller" in real life, I will let you know.

The 1981 film, in my opinion, is much more comical than the 2013 film. Bruce Campbell does an excellent job in his Ash character, and I missed him in the 2013 remake.

1981
2013
The 2013 film is much more gorier than the 1981 film. The scenes are more gorier. A fun fact: Before watching this film in theatre I had a couple of shots of Vodka, so I was tipsy during the first few minutes of the movie, and I found every scene hilarious. During the middle of the film the alcohol started wearing off, and I flinched at every gory scene I saw.

The 2013 film is definitely more dark than the 1981 film. It's also scarier in a sense. I don't feel it outshines the original film, but it is definitely a great film to add to the collection.

2013
1981

Hansel & Gretel (2013)

Hansel & Gretel
Release Date: January 8, 2013
Rated PG-13
Horror
Director: Anthony C. Ferrante

Rating: One Thumb Up

Ok....I'm taking a different approach with this film review. After watching so many films about cannibalism, I want to know exactly what makes a person a cannibal and, why. Why does a person choose this?

Now, as I've said before; I hate cannibalistic movies. I know there is some truth in pretty much any film out there, but something about cannibalism makes my blood run cold. I mean...knowing that somewhere...out there in this mad world, there is a psycho that would chop me up and shushkabob me. It's in humane. More in humane than just raping me, killing me, and tossing my body in the lake.

I've always said my number one fear is to become a victim of human trafficking. Now, I think my number one fear would be to become some lunatic's meal. Go buy a steak asshole, and let my body rot in peace.

A Bit of Knowledge

So, where was I? Oh yeah...the search. So, I did a search on cannibalism, and came across a site on How Cannibalism Works, and article by Josh Clark. He talks about cannibalism lightly here, and in a sense I can understand, but I still say it's weird.

First, we are introduced to Armin Meiwes.  This guy found his victims on online personal sites with advertisements. His catch line was "Well-built men, 18-30, who would like to be eaten by me." Well, needless to say, one guy was stupid enough to respond. 43-year-old Bernd-Jurgen Brandes. This first description I cannibalism is called Panthrological Anthropophagy.

Next, they talk about Survival Cannibalism. Here, they talk about 16 survivors of the Andean plane crash and how they resorted to cannibalism to stay alive. Clark describes this as the most disturbing cannibalism. He talks about the Donner Party, a group of Westward expansionists set out to California, and 89 of them took a shortcut through the Sierra Nevada mountains. They faced starvation, ran out of other food resources, and turned to cannibalism.

Now, we come to Endocannibalism. Clark talks about the Yanomamo tribes of Brazil and Venezuela. They practice Endocannibalism by mixing ashes of dead relatives in a plantain soup and eating it. This is the opposite of Survival Cannibalism. It often contains a ritual or socially sanctioned method.

Next is Exocannobalism. Clark talks about the corpse of Claude Neal who was tortured, forced to commit autocannibalism, and killed by white Southerners in Florida. Exocannibism is based on to terrify, to steal someone's life, or to eat.

I also came across Rolo Tamasi's article on the top 10 cases of human cannibalism, where we are introduced to 10 top cannibals. Among them:

*Alferd Packer
*Albert Fish
*Revolutionary United Front
*Issei Sagawa
*Andrei Chikatilo
*Mauerova Family
*Armin Meiwes
*Jeffrey Dahmer
*Carib West Indian Tribes
*Stella Maris College Rugby Team Uruguay

Back to the movie

Now that we got the basis of cannibalism out of the way, we can get back to the film. "Hansel & Gretel" is about brother and sister, Hansel and Gretel Grimm, who, after hearing about their father's engagement to his girlfriend, Gretel gets mad and runs away. Hansel follows him, and they stumble upon a house deep in the woods.

After being hurt, Hansel helps Gretel to the house, where they seek help from Lillith. Well, Hansel knows Lillith...but what she doesn't know, she will soon find out.

At one point, this movie had me cringing. I really get uneasy with cannibalistic movies. However, this movie isn't too unsettling. There are worst cannibalistic movies out there.

Check it out on Netflix.

Pumpkinhead II (1994)

Pumpkinhead II: Blood Wings
Release Date: March 16, 1994
Rated R
Horror, Action
Director: Jeff Burr

Rating: One Thumb Up

And to think that some people only become killers because they were simply not accepted.

Tommy (Pumpkinhead) was a normal kid. However, he was deformed. Miss Osie was his guardian. She was also protector over his soul. When a group of kids torture and murder Tommy, he turns into a vengeful creature.

Years later, a group of college students stumble upon Miss Osie, find a spell in her home, and unknowingly unleash the spirit of Tommy that now becomes Pumpkinhead. Upon being summoned, Pumpkinhead seeks vegance upon those who not only hurt him, but hurt Miss Osie as well.

This film had me close to tears in a couple scenes. The beginning scene, where Tommy is being tortured by the kids, and the ending scene, where Pumpkinhead is being treated in the same manner.

Of course we know after all of the killings he's done, he's bound to pay the price. It won't be a happy ending for him. Someone has to put the beast to rest before he kills again. However, given his background and the reason for his madness, you find yourself feeling a bit sympathetic.

I don't like how, during some of the killing scenes, there's a lot of flashing going on and it's hard to see what's going on without squinching your eyes. Otherwise, the movie is a good watch and a nice add to the collection.

Peace.
