Since American Mary was one of the most recent movies I've watched, I will start off this blog with this movie review. Now, I must say that this is an original movie. The story is original. It's not something you're seeing over and over again like a lot of these movies nowadays. Maybe I just haven't watched a lot of movies like this so far, but this is a first for me.
Mary is in school to become a doctor. A surgeon to be exact. When you meet Mary you would think her whole life has just been rough. She's very nice, but very quiet and to herself. It seems like she's holding in a lot of secrets and troubles. This is what I get when I observe Mary, and kind of "dissect" her, if you will.
All of this changes when "Sweet Girl Mary" is pushed to her limit. And we (the audience) are introduced to her "evil twin", or her "darker half", or her "split personality". Whatever you want to call it, she's not the Mary we first meet in the beginning.
So Mary is looking for more work to make ends meet. So she winds up at a strip joint, which seems to be falling to the ground by the looks of the place and the "dead" crowds inside of it. Not in literal terms of course. When the club's owner, Billy, asks Mary "would you like to make five thousand bucks?" (Billy, "American Mary"). Mary's whole world changes.
She meets Beatrice. Now, I'm not gonna lie. When I first saw Beatrice, I flinched. Her face, her voice, her body. She looks like a real life Barbie doll. If I had to get anymore specific, she looks like Betty Boop (literally). And the characters in this movie only gets even more freakier.
Mary is now thrust into a world of underground surgeries that become pretty bizarre. Body modification. Are you grasping this concept??? Because that's all you need to know to understand this movie. "Body modification".
At first, this creeped Mary out and she wants nothing more to do with it. But the more and more she thinks, next to the great pay she's been getting, she finds she can use this newfound interest as a path towards vengeance on those who wronged her. Maybe it's just me....but Mary has become quite scary at this point.
This movie is more-so shocking than scary. I found myself more in shock on what was going on, and just appalled at what some people will do to themselves in their attempts to be "different". There is some gore apparent in this movie, but not too much to make you lose your appetite. Of course me....I have a strong stomach so I can take a lot of gore.
My suggestion...watch this movie.
Peace
